“There are two activities in my personal life that give me limitless amounts of joy. They are quite simply, driving my electric car and making a trip to the hazardous waste facility.

First off, driving an electric car could not be more fun. People are constantly coming up to me and asking a range of questions. How does it drive? Great, surprisingly peppy. How does it work? You charge it at home with a charging unit that’s installed and charges overnight. What kind of range do you have? I can go up to eighty miles on one charge, which for city driving means I can go an entire week before I charge it again. If I lose weight, I can go even farther! In fact, I constantly tell people that if you could drive this car, you wouldn’t want to drive another car. There’s no emissions, it’s quiet, and for the cost of the electricity (which comes out to roughly thirty cents a gallon), there’s no wonder the auto industry stopped making and started destroying these cars. But they can’t hold back the tide. They’re going to be coming back, and if you get a chance, purchase one; it makes your heart smile when you drive.

Now when I pull up to the hazardous waste facility with my EV…look out. There’s nothing more exciting than empyting my garage of used paints, old batteries, any old appliance or piece of electronics, and loading up my electric car. It’s a great feeling that we, as a family, are not putting any those items in a landfill. That they are being disposed of properly. And here’s the best part! You pull up to the collection station and never have to get out of your car!! The people working on-ste ask you to unlock your trunk and they do all the rest.

It’s funny how these small things, these actions, add up to be big things.”  - Will Ferrell from The Green Book

What some others are doing to save the planet:

1) Leonardo DiCaprio

What he does:

Leo started an eco-site in 2000 to advocate and spread awareness of current environmental issues. Jack Dawson is also a Board Member of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Global Green USA. His apartment features rotating solar panels, low emission paint and a 24-hour fresh filtered air system. He also has a love for his electric car.

What can you do?

Integrate green living in your own home and at work. Advocate on something, because every little bit helps. You can easily go green at home by efficiently utilizing resources like energy, water and materials, and reducing the building’s impact on human health and the environment.

2) Brad Pitt

What he does:
Brad, who always wanted to be an architect, is putting his passion to good use by re-building eco-friendly homes in New Orleans. Pitt collaborated with Global Green USA to build 150 green homes in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, the area most affected by Hurricane Katrina. He convinced 9 civic groups and 13 architecture firms to provide their services for free, and with that also donated $5 million to support his $12 million dollar Make It Right project.

What can you do?

We can make some eco-friendly changes in our own home. Use low-wattage light bulbs and install motion sensors so that you will not leave the lights on. If you are going to begin a remodelling or building project, focus on sustainable architecture. Support non-profit membership organizations whose mission is to promote healthy, energy- and resource-efficient building practices.

3) Pamela Anderson

What she does:
Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has recently tied up with the Atlas Group to build a green spa & hotel in Montenegro. The hotel and spa, based on ecological principals, will offer vegetarian and organic food, plenty of entertainment and contemporary design.

What can you do?
We can contribute by making miniscule adjustments during hotel stays: taking shorter showers, reusing the towels, and asking housekeeping not to change the sheets daily.

4) Cameron Diaz

What she does:
Cameron actively works with the organization Act Green and insists on using offsets of carbon-neutral travel. She also can be seen driving around Hollywood in her hybrid Toyota Prius. She has also started rocking eco-friendly fashion.

What can you do?
Use eco-friendly clothes, re-use old items and find clothes that require minimal care. Find alternative ways to travel in the city (i.e. Bixi, metro,  walking, or rideshare).

5) Will Ferrell

What he does:
Will is associated with the Pioneer Program under which BMW’s luxurious hydrogen cars are given to celebrities to elevate awareness. The zero-emission eco-friendly sedan that has completed the product development process will be made available soon.

What can you do?
We can contribute by greening our driving style by moving slow, steady and smooth rather than racing to make a light. Make ways to keep your car clean with regular check-ups so there is less gas consumption.

6) Justin Timberlake

What he does:
Justin Timberlake has opened his new eco-friendly Mirimichi Golf Course, making it the first in the country to receive the Audubon International Classic Sanctuary certification. Justin has installed a rainwater-driven irrigation system to water the course. In addition, the course uses solar-powered golf carts to cut down on energy cost.

What can you do?
We certainly cannot go as big as Timberlake, but nonetheless we can use rainwater to irrigate our lawns.
